I saw this male grizzly bear up in Chitistone Pass for 4 years in a row, each summer. He was the only grizzly bear I’ve ever seen in the backcountry that I felt comfortable approaching to photograph, as he seemed to be reasonably used to people, but not at all food conditioned. Typically, in the backcountry of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, grizzlies are pretty skittish, and hard to approach. We were on a photo tour this particular trip, and a few participants said they’d like to photograph him, so we spent a few hours carefully approaching and hanging around, trying to make some photos. Good times!
