One summer I spent a few weeks trying to get some waterfowl photos in the park. I took my small boat, a canoe made out of a kayak, and made a number of trips to get out n the water and catch some of the birds in the park. They’d mostly returned in May, and by early June they were plentiful.
This Arctic loon was one of a nesting pair on a small lake on the McCarthy Road. Loon pairs return each year to the same lake or pond to nest on, and I’d spent a few days trying to photograph this particular loon the previous year. It was a real treat to have them cautiously approach me one afternoon, begin to get comfortable with me being on their lake, and then give the opportunity to make some photos. Loons are some of the most beautiful birds I’ve ever seen or heard.
